In my office I have a book of quotes that I from time to time peruse, to enlighten or inspire me. I was looking at it last week and noticed one that struck me with its simplicity that I would like to share.
"Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person we become."
In my line of work, helping others attain their goals that they have yet to achieve, this statement is such a basic premise to me, but not to others. We have all heard by now of "The Secret" and most have probably seen previews for it if not the whole movie. Its basic tenement is discussing and exploring the powers of the Laws of Attraction. That which you focus on is what you get! Sounds very simple doesn't it? So if it is so simple why are not more people enjoying more fulfilling lives? Why do we not have the relationships we want, or the bank roll we dream of, or the health we crave? I refer you back to the above quote for the answer. Success in what ever form we choose or dream of is to occur through the person we become. If you want better relationships with others or your spouse, how is the relationship with yourself? Is it healthy, and whole, or do we look to others to "complete" us? That nice bank roll or the high paying job, do we honestly feel that we are worthy of receiving it? If you are beginning to sense a pattern here you are right! I will use the example that I see in the clinic quiet often to fully explain. There are clients that come to see me to help them in losing weight. One of the first things that I explain to them is that weight loss is very rarely about weight loss it is more about improving the image of self from the inside. Have you ever wondered why people will have radical procedures done on them to loose weight and in a few months maybe a year it is all but returned? If the "inside" view or impression is not consistent with what we desire on the "outside"... well we live full time on the inside of our own heads, and only see ourselves from the outside for a portion of our day. Our mind has all the power and ability to assist us in our goals or to return things to how we truly see ourselves.
Success is all in your head so learn to create and become the success you desire there first, and the rest will always follow!"
I used to say "I hope things change for me real quick." and I have come to realize that the only way things are going to change for me is when I do."
I know we have probably all been around people that have bemoaned that they want a change in their luck or lives so bad, or maybe you are one of them, but the real truth is that our lives change the instant we choose to change inside. I am not talking cosmetic or reconstructive surgery here, but the subtle and wholesome alteration of how we perceive our world around us in our own minds. There are many different learned techniques that help us facilitate this more healthy shift in attitude which we are already very aware of. For example the simple step of what we call reframing... is the glass half empty or half full? This oversimplified example can be contagious either way you choose to use it, and forgive the pun, can start spilling over into other area's of your life. It was once said that you always get to prove yourself right! It is a statement that I do believe, for as our attitudes and perceptions change from how we think, amazingly enough does our reality on the outside.
The blame game has all been used up, so no longer can so and so put you in a bad mood, and as we accept that realization we also accept the empowerment in ourselves to make changes necessary for your happiness, after all it is yours isn't it and who has a more vested interest in it than you?
Deem yourself worthy for your happiness, and take the steps necessary to acquire it, no else will if you don't.
